Heap leaching is carried out in the extraction of copper, nickel, uranium and precious metals. Insitu Leaching. Insitu leaching is also known as insitu recovery, or solution mining. This is especially used to extract copper and uranium. In this process, holes are drilled into the ore deposit by explosive or hydraulic fracturing methods.
One method is to melt them with fluxes in a smelter furnace to produce copper matte, which is a mixture mainly of iron and copper sulfides usually containing 50 to 70% copper. The molten matte is poured into a converter, which contains more fluxes and converted into blister copper, which is about 98 to 99% pure.
Copper mines are only set up where there is more than 5kg of copper per tonne of rock (0.5% by mass). Ideally, the figure should be closer to 2%.
